Summer Fashion Trends to HEAT up your Wardrobe
Or COOL IT down!!

By Teres Lucot, Owner Trunk Shows Boutique

There are quite a few elements of change in the fashion world this Summer Season.  With the warm, warm days approaching, and some cool nights, it’s a great idea to look at what the Summer Season has to illustrate to us in design and wear-ability.

There are six themes that will be focused upon for this season; they are- ORGANIC, SPECTATOR CLASSICS, SUBTRACTIVE DESIGN, INDUSTRIAL, ROMANCE, AND WORLD MUSIC.

The world is ever changing with high tech, instant reward, internet, fast lane.  But, what always remains true is NATURE.  Much attention has been played on organics in the food industry, and the clothing industry is now magnetized by the look of nature. .  Foliage greens, stone grays, sandy browns, and wood tones.  Loose and layered, casual and relaxed. The Asian emphasis is a big trend with wraps, ties, pleats, folds.  There is a lack of crisp lines.  The Fabrics are natural fibers and natural feeling synthetics.  Textured stretchy and wrinkled fabrics illustrate the innovative and durability of these new found fabrics that turn into great garments.

Theme two involves the SPECTATOR CLASSICS- the classics form the 1920’s and 30”s and anything with nautical jaunt.  The colors are bi or tricolor combinations with solids, geometrics, polka dots, retro patterns and novelty prints. The look is classic with sophistication and refinement.  Well constructed ensembles with an acute emphasis on accessories.

A third prevalent theme in the fashion industry this season is LESS is MORE.  With basic colors and neutrals, cool blues and grays.  The look is sleek and modern, streamlined, simple, and fuss- free.  Tailored and with the spotlight on the lines or cuts of garments is also an important aspect that can be seen. The fabrics of course also reveal a wet-look, sateen and /or glazed or coated look. One can see this in handbags, shoes and high fashion garments from the big fashion houses.

We also can get our fashion appeal from the INDUSTRIAL theme.  Numbers are important, along with dark hues and silver tones mixed with intense safety colors.  The look is active and utilitarian.  It is a multi-purpose look with hoods, jumpsuits, toggle closures, zippers, snaps, bungee cords, and organizational pockets.  The fabric is denim, techno fabrics, jersey knits and a wicking material.

The fifth theme gathers its inspiration from the ROMANCE period, reminiscent of   the Regency period in England. Neutrals, Gold and Pastels accompany print patterns. The prints can be ones of small scale nature motifs, wall paper damasks and jacquards.  The look is elegant, with empire waist bodices, and combining masculine and feminine styles. The vest, skinny pants, and antique feel are also a must in the interlude of ROMANCE. The necktie has an influence here also. The emphasis here is on ribbon, pleats, buttons, draping and details. The fabrics are sheer, lace, wrinkled. Lightweight denim, cotton voile, linen, silk, tweed and herringbone show it way into this look of the Romance period.

The last theme is WORLD MUSIC OR INTERNATIONAL CULTURE. The colors are wide ranging with vibrant combinations.  The prints can range from Ethnic Stripes to Pop Art.  The fabric could be floral, patchwork, tribal designs, bandana paisley, plaids, geometrics and camouflage.    There is a Latin influence, accompanied with peasant separates. The eclectic look combines some traditional elements with varying cultures.

I took the time to illustrate in great detail the influences of nature, the 1920’s and 30’s the less is more theme joining with the last two themes of industrial and world culture. These themes influence the designers to make active wear, clothing for day to weekend casual. They remain consistent with these themes thru accessorizing in jewelry, handbags, and shoes.  Even home accessories and interior design will move in these directions.

The conclusion- you can interpret your look in any way you’d like to dress.  Your pocketbook may dictate how much you can spend. If that is the case, accessorizing will help you to freshen your wardrobe in any season.  Mixing and eclectic is in.  Neutrals, brights and patterns are in. There is nothing like the summer time to try a new color or patterned top, or bottom.  If don’t prefer that, then purchase a handbag or a piece of jewelry that will help to give you a different look that you are comfortable with.
